Gaming Culture Note #1

As a result of posting videos to Battlelog individuals get a hate on for me because of my different playstyle. This leads to players trying to hunt me down and kill me and make a film of the event. Like this one:

A curious aspect of “micro-celebrity” culture in online gaming? Certainly something new to me and, I think, rather rare in the genre of virtual videography.

Very flattering — would love to see this become a trend and gather together a collection of videos made by people who seek to frag me.

Battlelog Feedback and Aesthetic Intolerance

The new Battlelog feature of BF3 is quite interesting as a site for mining the culture of online gaming. BF3 is an example of the movement towards social networking within gaming.

I should begin collecting and categorizing some of the more interesting posts from the TG and Battlelog forums.

I’ll start with this one from TigKill, a TG member, posted to Battlelog:

i enjoyed reading this thread lol it reminded me alot of TG from the complainers and behind the back talk about e-male lol oh so funny

I see a subject of study emerging as a result of the Battlelog threads that I did not anticipate, one that follows on Pierre Bourdieu’s observation that “aesthetic intolerance can be terribly violent.”

He was talking about the “aversion to different life-styles” — the rejection of those that do not adopt the dominant styles and values. One can see this aversion to different styles in the hateful responses to my videos posted to the Battlelog forums and the comments on my YouTube videos. Within the heavily moderated context of TacticalGamer.com the aesthetic intolerance gets pushed down to behind-the-threads “complainers and behind the back talk”.

Fascinating.

Sharqi Peninsula Strategy

The following 14 minute video provides an example of the two fireteam method of squad organization and command as used on the Russian team at Sharqi Peninsula (Battlelog Report).

My TG squad (-1stMIP-Manner, Protoman-swe, Mr.Jacuzzi) will assist in the attack of Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie flags and provide defensive support to the A/B/C sector of Sharqi Peninsula.

Using Bravo as a base of operations I will shift resources between Alpha and Charlie to maintain control of this zone throughout the majority of the battle.

It is notable that my although my squad finished in four of the bottom six of the team point scores, we nonetheless arguably provided a solid contribution to the team’s win.

One Squad Leading: Part 1

The goal of squad leading in the virtual environment of military games is not to emulate the specific manner of squad leading in real life. For now I’ll not go into the many reasons why this would be an error. For those acquainted with online military first person shooters such as Battlefield 3 such an digression is unnecessary. Having said this, it must also be said that much is to be learned from real life tactics, strategies, and the standard operating procedures of infantry squads.

Many individuals who describe online gaming as a hobby are also students of military history and tactics. Consider the comments of oldtimer49:

. . . I am an amateur military historian, understand strategy and tactics, and most importantly, can follow orders.

My own style of leadership is what I call the water carrier method.

A footballer on the French national team, Eric Cantona, once famously described the role of Didier Deschamp as that of a ‘water-carrier’. This remark has been misunderstood as a mere slight against Deschamp, suggesting that Deschamp’s role was to serve the ball to more skillful players who would then make the goals. Deschamp’s record is second to none in the history of football, so we need to think deeper about the role of water carrying than just a simplistic good, better, best hierarchy of skill.

I see my squad leading role as a facilitator. I try to ensure that my men are in the proper position relative to each other and the enemy so they can make the shot, kill the enemy, and get the score.

Some recent feedback on the 1stMIP videos posted to Battlelog . . .

E-male, although first critical of your movies I just want to say now I actually quite enjoy them. Although your stats are not super or anything your tips and advice are usually very sound. Keep making them, it’s fun to watch.– Izithel

I like that there are people out there who think deeply about the game. This is part of what makes Battlefield the game it is. I like it that people explore real-life tactics in a game like ours. Sure, it’s not ArmA but there’s nothing wrong with steady progression on an objective, checking corners and distances and the like. It’s the same impulse that drove someone to decrpt the weapon stats and all that good stuff. I showed those charts to an MW3-playing mate of mine and he was stunned someon had gone to the obvious bother.

As for what the OP’s KDR may or may not be. What does that matter? The advise isn’t any less valid if his KDR is less than 1 and his ability observe and comment are not affected. We’re all trying to up our game… — locksymania

like the vids, keep em coming, simple and straight forward and have helped me to re-avaluate the situations im in on the battlefiled and im improving
many thanks — major_issues_80
